Road to be closed Oct 18 & 19

We are currently planning to close the Auto Road to all traffic on October 18 and 19 while we pave the area from the Hairpin Turn down through Six Mile Park.  This will be highly weather dependant so please give us a call if you were planning an Auto Road visit on those two days.  Whenever possible we try to conduct maintenance that will require the Road to be closed when it will have the least impact on tourist traffic - we appreciate your understanding as we continue to improve the Auto Road experience.

With that exception, we intend to operate daily through October 21, weather permitting.

I drove to the top of Pikes Peak in the mid September and it's a LOT higher than Mt. Washington. Does the road REALLY need to be closed in October?

Normally we would announce a closing date for marketing purposes and then take it day by day after that date - if the weather on Mt Washington even allowed us to get to the published closing date. This year because of scheduled road maintenance (in addition to the paving on the 18th and 19th,)that will require the full closure of both lanes of the Auto Road, we will be closing for the season on Oct 21. As of this date no further public traffic will ascend the Auto Road after that date. Now having said that...I'll have to admit that if we get into late October and the maintenance is finished and the weather blossoms into mid summer conditions as it did last year, we may very well take a look at opening again on a day to day basis. Have you seen what's happening on the summit over the last few days? Check out www.mountwashington.org, the Observatory website for live weather data. It's winter up there right now. The other day one of our 4x4s with new studded chains on all four went for an "interesting" ride on the glare ice near the top. We may get to the top again this year - or, maybe not, Mt washington's weather will decide.
