Finally some great skiing!
So this is what winter is all about
WOW! It was just a 4 inch snow storm but it came down wet and heavy followed by rain. Then the temperatures dropped and it snowed a little more as this wet snow was firming up. The result has to be skied to be believed. Maybe I'm just sick of the winter we've been having so far but that hour I just skied (11:00 am 1/9/07) is exactly what I needed to get back in the right frame of mind. Mind you we're skiing on 3 inches of snow with 1/2 inch of powder but it's fast, consistant and smooth side to side. Our trails are smooth packed gravel and that makes all the difference. I was skating but a classical skier will love this too. The removal of 140 softwood trees this past fall was just in time. Those were the trees that were "shading" the trails from consistant snow fall and causing the resulting hung up snow to then melt and ice up the trails. With those trees gone the trails are wonderfully covered with snow consistantly from edge to edge. Where there are thin spots you can readily see them. Woohoo! - Howie

Yeehaw!! Yes that's me, skating with the biggest smile I've had on my face in a while. Ditto on all Howie said. What a wonderful sport xc skiing is, when conditions are right. I believe I can fly . . . .
And . . . our runs down the tubing hill were a blast also! :)

I skied today and it felt wonderful!!!! I can't believe how good the skating is. It's just what my doctor ordered! Ben enjoyed the Aquaduct Loop as well. I'll have to bring my snowshoes next time since the snow is getting deeper. Yipee!!!!!!! Nordic Meisters, here we come!

He talked me into going up to Great Glen again. Well, it's not all that difficult to talk me into doing that. It's really fun there. I was skeptical about skiing the trails in the woods but guess what? They are GREAT! Skate skiing was really fun yesterday and today. Nate and Scott have been busy making snow to cover up some of the thin spots at the intersections. The woods are just fine. All our Meister friends should get up to Great Glen and and check out the course. It's a good one.

Roe and I toured the Meisters loop this afternoon 1/11 for the 2nd day in a row and found the conditions mostly delightful. A couple of thin places had adequate detours, but 98% of the loop was excellent. We were on skates and found all the powder needed for a fun time. (except Nate was manning the snowmaking machine and entertained himself by throwing snowballs at us) Looks very promising for the long-delayed Meisters - and it is really nice to get off the 0.5K carousel.
