Auto Road paving

Some much needed maintenance...
On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29th and 30th, the Auto Road will be closed to all private vehicles and guided tours while we pave several sections of the upper mountain road. This two day paving operation was originally scheduled to be done during the late fall last year however when Mother Nature didn't cooperate, we were forced to put it off until this spring. The weather looks favorable this time around although it looks like it will be plenty windy and chilly when the crew tackles the Cow Pasture to Hairpin stretch. Most of the paving will be overlaying sections that are deteriorating due to winter snowcat traffic but we will also be doing some new paving over gravel on the Six Mile - continuing with our long term goal to pave the entire Six Mile section.
We apologize for the inconvenience that we know this causes those of you who are in the area only during this time and will not be able to make the drive to the summit as you may have wished.
Our Lodge, the Glen View Cafe, gift shop, and Great Glen Trails will all remain open during this period.

There will still be snow by next weekend, although probably a little less due to any rain and warm temps. I drove up with a friend on Memorial Day and there's a small (~150 verts) snowfield above Huntington Ravine at the bottom of the Alpine Garden.. Turkey Shoot, Airplane and Pipeline in the Great Gulf are still skiable, although short and steep. NE snowfields are non-existent. Over all, Monday was a great day atop the rockpile - the road looks great, no crowds and pretty decent weather.
Great Glen Trails has a micro-hydro generation station on site that supplies about 20% of our electrical needs.
