Herr and Ferrin Battle the Bugs to Win There’s a Black Fly in My Eye

Pinkham Notch, NH—On a perfect day for running at the base of Mt. Washington, Dave Herr of Canaan, VT and Bridget Ferrin of St. Johnsbury, Vermont won There’s a Black Fly in My Eye 15k Trail Race and Relay at Great Glen Trails. The team of Susan Thompson, Tami Hartley and Kevin Croft won the 3-person relay competition and Matt Darois and Peter McNeil took first in the 2-person relay division. Nearly 80 competitors competed in the race.

Now in its second year, There’s a Black Fly in My Eye is a 15K trail running race made up of three distinct loops on the Great Glen Trails trail system. Loop 1, the North Loop, is made up of mostly winding and rolling carriage roads. Loop 2, the Aqueduct Loop, is the most rugged featuring single track and rocky trails complete with stream crossings and boggy sections. Loop 3, the West Loop, doesn’t get any easier with a mix of carriage roads, single track and steep climbs, plus a river crossing.
Herr took an early lead and never let up on the way to winning with a time of 1:02:58 over Michael Fenzel of White River Junction,Vermont who finished in 1:05:27. Andy King from Lowell, MA was third in 1:09:02.
On the women’s side, the story was much the same with Ferrin taking an early lead and cruising to victory with a time of 1:16:15. Mary Meehan of Intervale, NH was second in 1:20:30, and Sarah Zlherl of Sandwich, New Hampshire was third in 1:22:22.
A fast third loop by the anchor leg, 14-year-old Kevin Croft of Gorham, NH, lead the team of Susan Thompson of Shelburne, NH and Tami Hartley of Randolph, NH to victory with a time of 1:24:21.
Matt Darois of Newmarket, New Hampshire ran two strong loops for his team as he and Peter McNeil of Barrington, New Hampshire won their division easily with a time of 1:10:59
All competitors received a t-shirt and were treated to a post-race barbecue during the awards ceremony and prize raffle.
The trails at Great Glen Trails are open daily for trail running with the next trail running event coming up on Thursday, August 30 when the Montrail Fall Trail Running Series kicks off. The Montrail Fall Trail Running Series runs for six week on Thursdays. Competitors may log their times between 3:30p.m. and 6:30p.m., and those that complete 4 of 6 weeks will qualify for the series-end prize raffle.
