Tom Gosselin Wins Title of Best All-Around Cyclist in New England at the Porky Gulch Classic

Pinkham Notch, NH—Tom Gosselin of Lewiston, Maine won two of the three stages of Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center’s Porky Gulch Classic to take home the title of Best All-Around Cyclist in New England. Drawing 36 competitors this year, including two father-son duos, the two-day, three-stage Porky Gulch Classic is the most unique and challenging cycling event in New England.

On Saturday, November 4, cyclists tackled the Toughest Two, a two-mile hillclimb up the Mt. Washington Auto Road. This first stage was shortened to 1.5 miles due to early winter snows on Mt. Washington. Anders Larson of South Portland, Maine won the Toughest Two in 9:25.

Saturday afternoon the Porky Gulch Classic moved to Story Land for the one-of-a-kind Story Land Criterium. Gosselin turned 11 laps in 41:40 through the closed amusement park for a 12-second victory over Craig Harrison of Bartlett, New Hampshire. The competitors faced a stiff headwind on the homestretch as they tackled a course with many more twists and turns than a traditional criterium.

The event wrapped up on Sunday with the Rockpile Rampage, a cyclocross race, at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center. It was Gosselin over Harrison again, but this time by nearly two minutes for a convincing victory with 8 laps in 45:36.

Points were awarded based on competitors’ place in each stage. Gosselin took the overall victory in the Elite Men’s division with 167 points to Harrison’s 154. Steve Piotrow of Jackson, New Hampshire was third with 149. In the Intermediate Men’s division Mike Rowell of Bedford, Massachusetts took second place in each of the three stages for the overall victory with 165 points. Jay Busse of Harrisville, Rhode Island was second with 161 and Kirk Fongemie of Portland, Maine was third with 148. Todd Keebaugh of Lexington, Massachusetts won the Beginner Men’s division, and Littleton, New Hampshire’s Tamela Lynch was tops for Beginner Women. Sean Doherty of Center Conway, New Hampshire was the leading Beginner Junior Male.
