Course Conditions?

Postby ChrisJDunn on Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:35 pm

Hey Folks;

Curious about current course conditions for the 24HOGG? I've done this race for a number of years and there have been times when parts of the trail network are unrideable due to the mud. Wondering if the course will be improved this year to reduce hike-a-bike and increase 'rideability' for those of us in the middle of the pack? I know the pro's ride everything, but it's a bummer for me to have to push through sections of the race.

As always acidotic RACING is stoaked and can't wait for the event.

Cheers.

It looks good at the moment as it has been a dry summer. There are a number of new bog bridges being built on Peacemaker and Wilding to improve the rideability if there is any mud. Also there is work being done on the trails up past Honeymoon that had to be excluded last year because of trail condition. Once this work is done it should really improve things. They have already completed a new exit of of Moose Alley that is a significant improvement, as well as re-routing one of the switchbacks on the blueberry hill that keeps us clear of the "swamp turn" (however it means part of the climb has a bit more bite as it is steeper).

I haven't ridden all this new wood work as it is being done now- but did see all the supplies out at the various trail heads and hope to get out and give it a run next week.

That being said for anyone who has never done a 24, know that the course changes over the course of the race. A dry tacky course can become a bit greasy at night, and all parts of the course will "groove in"- however don't be afraid to try lines that don't look like they have seen a lot of traffic. I know last year by Sunday morning I was trying a lot of new lines that hadn't seen much traffic and was wishing I had tried them out much earlier in the race!

cheers,

Hey all,

I rode the course last week and it was super dry and fast. Not one drop of mud throughout. There is a new loop that has been added on the base lodge side of the road which is pretty nice. Also, if it does get muddy there are a few new bridges and a turnpike thing in place. It seems like there are a few more steps near the last little downhill section as you near the finish too. Great course! :D
