We skied today!
(More blog entries from howie)
Well, it wasn't at Great Glen but it sure was fun....
Sue woke up this morning and looked out our window in Randolph (NH) and exclaimed " Look at how wonderful it is!" We'd gotten over 7" of snow up on Randolph Hill in the last 36 hours and it looked like mid-winter. A quick call to GGT got Nate on the phone to bring the enthusiasm down a notch when he reported that you could still see grass out there, so not so much fell in Pinkham this time. Rats! We were so looking to get out. But Nate, who had been on RSN-TV that morning also said that they had heard that Bretton Woods had groomed and opened a few k. A call over there was unproductive when neither the phone was answered nor was there a message saying they were open. We drove over anyway and were delighted to find that they had in fact groomed and set tracks on several km. It was good - very early - skiing! Reasonable tracks had been set and the folks who were skating seemed to be having as good a time as we were in spite of the lack of a firm platform. It is November 17 after all. So get over there if you want to get is some decent early season skiing - a bargain at $10 which is what's currently being charged. It was good to see many of the valley's dedicated skiers there this morning! So when will GGT groom and be open? Good question. The ground remains unfrozen so this snow will not last long when the sun comes out as it is right now. Because our trails have a nice smooth gravel base which is great for biking in summer, it's not so much fun when you go through the thin early season snow cover to hit base. So we need the ground to freeze, the daytime temps to drop a bit and obviously, more snow. We'll crank up our snowmaking system when it begins to seem economically sensible to do that - hopefully sometime next week!

It was really fun to be skiing again. There is nothing quite like cross country skiing--out in the cool, crisp air, gliding along on flats and over hills, surrounded by glistening, fluffy white snow. It may sound corny but, when ski-able snow returns to our part of NH and I get back out on my skis, it feels like I am welcoming back an old and very dear friend. Hooray for snow!

The last time we skied this early was a few years back at GGT it was Nov 11th. We skied at BW today just to say that we skied on Nov 17th. It wasn't perfect but it was skiable. Had a great time.

My wife skied this year before me. What is happening? You all read my blog last year about my lengthening Nordic Meister times...now my wife is making tracks before me. Somebosy needs to free me from this terrible downward spiral I seemed to circling.

Hey Nate,
I think you need to rewrite that one in a blog of it's own so it will get proper attention from all your fans. Buried in this blog as an answer to someone else it just won't get the respect (or abuse!)it should command.
Great Glen Trails has three marked Nordic Walking courses for all abilities.
