Progress on Cragway

(More blog entries from ryan)

Still moving up.

The crew has made good progress on Cragway the past couple days. The snows are being moved, and it might actually look like a road sometime soon.

The good news is that once they work their way through Cragway drift, the upper two miles of the Road have much less, if any, snow on them. The only task will be clearing the culverts. (I guess that's easy for me to say.)

The real trick right now is this rain storm that's moving through. It's certain to slow progress, at best. At worst, it will let us know what shape the gravel portions of the Road are in this early in the season. Let's hope we don't have to go back and do too many repairs.

Won't the rain help melt the snow off?

Unfortunately when the rain falls as heavily as it has since last night, it combines with the melting snow to create a runoff that is often uncontrollable. This is happening on the Six Mile stretch. Before we could get to that section to open up the culverts and control the running water we have had incredible runoff that is damaging the ditches as well as the paved sections of the road. The snow that started falling up there around 2 pm was welcomed since it would reduce the amount melting and with the falling temperatures start to refreeze everything. Tomorrow will be a real eye opener for us as we survey the damage from this not-all-that-unusual weather event. Bad timing with the confluence of heavy rain on top of already fast melting snow - Mt Washington showing us who's boss.

We are planning on hiking up to do Tuckermans for the first time on Saturday (two 48 year olds and sons 10 and 14). Is it possible to take a ride back down from somewhere near Tuck's??
